Magnolia

Little Gem

$150 (5'-6')

Planted Price (per tree): 1 tree–$200 | 2 trees–$175 | 3 or more trees–$150

Magnolia grandiflora is a broadleaf evergreen tree that is noted for its attractive dark green leaves and its large, extremely fragrant flowers. It typically grows to 60-80’ tall with a pyramidal to rounded crown. This is a magnificent tree of the South. It is native to moist wooded areas in the southeastern United States from North Carolina to Florida and Texas. Leathery evergreen ovate to elliptic leaves (to 10” long) are glossy dark green above and variable pale green to gray-brown beneath. Fragrant white flowers (to 8-12” diameter) usually have six petals. Flowers bloom in late spring, with sparse continued flowering throughout the summer. Flowers give way to spherical cone-like fruiting clusters (to 3-5” long) that mature in late summer to early fall, releasing individual rose-red coated seeds suspended on slender threads at maturity.

‘Little Gem’ is a much smaller and slower growing cultivar that typically grows as a compact upright multi-stemmed shrub or small tree to 20’ tall over the first 20 years. It features glossy green leaves (to 5” long) that are bronze-brown underneath. Leaves typically drop to the ground in spring as new foliage emerges. Fragrant white flowers (to 4” diameter) bloom in summer.

Jane

$200 (8'-9')

Planted Price (per tree): 1 tree–$200 | 2 trees–$175 | 3 or more trees–$150

Best grown in organically rich, neutral to slightly acidic, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Appreciates a root-zone mulch to help retain soil moisture. Also appreciates a location protected from strong winds, but avoid warm southern exposures which may promote premature bud opening in spring. Fleshy root system is easily damaged during transplanting, so it is best to select a landscape location carefully and leave this magnolia undisturbed once planted. Prune as needed immediately after flowering. Usually requires little pruning other than removal of dead or damaged branches.

Jane is a late-blooming magnolia that is less apt to suffer frost damage in spring.

Our Story

In 1980 David Buchanan Sr. and his wife, Judy, bought the "40 acre farm" from Judy’s father, Charles Moore Sr. The Moore family had lived there since 1944. Our original office was a tenant house where Burns and Nell Baker raised their family. They lived in the home since the early forties even before Charles Moore Sr. purchased the farm. In the summer of 2005, David Buchanan and Lisa Carter became partners in Landscape Services Inc. a business that Lisa started in 1989. In 2006 David Sr., David Jr., and Lisa became partners and began planting what is now Lovers Lane Tree Farm.
